Welcome to our December newsletter. We're on the countdown to Christmas and the holiday season and a time for everyone to take some time to rest and relax. It's also a time of year to remember those who are no longer with us. It has been a very challenging year with the Covid epidemic and it is something that unfortunately will continue to create uncertainty for quite some time yet. I would like to thank all my staff and board for all their hard work this year and facing the many extra challenges 2020 has thrown at all of us. Unfortunately this year we had to cancel our biannual Relay For Life, our Heritage Homes Tour and our annual Ball. Thankfully we were able to hold Daffodil Day in August and we would like to thank everyone who was involved. The support from our volunteers, businesses and the community was humbling and we raised over $115K which was an amazing result.
I hope you all have a restful Christmas and New Year break. Michelle Hunt-Centre Manager

The Vintage Car Club Rally was held on Sunday 15th November at the Nelson Speedway after being postponed in August due to Covid level 2 restrictions. The Vintage Car Club hold this annually throughout New Zealand to support The Cancer Society and it's an opportunity for everyone to experience a car rally. A total of 260 cars participated on Sunday and lots of spectators came along to view the amazing line up of cars. The Nelson Vintage Car Club raised $6,500 with all proceeds being donated to help support those in our community affected by cancer. Thank you to the Nelson Vintage Car Club for their ongoing support for this event and to the sponsors, volunteers and everyone who came along.
Are you ready to take on the Longest Day golf challenge? The aim is to complete four rounds of golf – that’s 72 holes - in one day to raise funds for people affected by cancer!
You choose the day, the course, and the team – or play solo if you prefer. The longest day of the year is 21st December, but you can play any day in December or January that suits you.
This is a perfect excuse to get your friends together for your longest day of golf this summer. It's easy to sign up and there's some great prizes to be won. Every fundraiser that raises $1,000 or more will earn themselves an exclusive Cancer Society BLUNT Sport Umbrella. The top fundraiser will win the grand prize of a round of golf for four at their choice of two of the top golf courses in the world - Cape Kidnappers, Hawke’s Bay or Kauri Cliffs, Northland.
Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in New Zealand and early detection is the best prevention. A generous bequest from Mr David Blunt has made it possible for the Cancer Society Nelson Tasman to offer skin check vouchers to the community. Skin Check vouchers (up to the value of $75 ) are available to people in the Nelson Tasman region. You can take your Skin Check voucher into your GP/Health Professional.
Our families enjoyed a morning paddle boarding on the Maitai river with Moana Paddle Nelson. Some had never done this before and it was great to see parents and children enjoying the experience.
The Whakatu Rotary Club invited our families with young children from the Nelson/Tasman and Blenheim Cancer Societies to the Rotoiti Lodge Outdoor Education Centre for the weekend. Activities included bush walks, kayaking, movie night and art and crafts. Thank you to The Whakatu Rotary Club and Rotoiti Lodge for giving our families this opportunity.
