What is Relay For Life?
Relay For Life is a team fundraising event like no other. Together, we walk, run, skip or dance our way around a track to symbolise our community’s unstoppable support for those affected by cancer.
Team members take turns carrying a baton, ensuring someone is always on the track throughout the event. Whether you have a personal connection to cancer or just want to make a difference, Relay is for everyone.
The Relay For Life Experience
The Survivor & Carers Celebration Lap
We open Relay with a lap led by cancer survivors and carers, the heart of our event. It’s a moving moment of hope and honour, and we welcome anyone with a lived experience of cancer to join.
Taking to the Track
From the Opening Ceremony at 4pm on Saturday to the Closing Ceremony at 8am Sunday, teams keep their baton moving around the track for 16 hours. Walk, run, skip or hop – it’s up to you.
The Candlelight Remembrance Ceremony
As night falls, we pause to remember. The track is lined with glowing candle bags, each dedicated to someone affected by cancer. It’s a time of quiet reflection, connection and remembrance.
The Fun Stuff
Expect music, performances, food and team spirit. Relay is full of energy and connection. There’s truly nothing like it.
Before the Big Day
Once you sign up, the journey begins. Many teams fundraise for months beforehand, from bake sales and car washes to quiz nights and online campaigns.
Every dollar raised helps fund cancer support services, health promotion and life-saving research across the Nelson Tasman region.
Relay is for Everyone
Whether you’ve had cancer, cared for someone who has, lost someone you love or simply want to stand in solidarity, you’re invited.
