National Volunteer Week 2026 Wrap-up | Cancer Society Nelson Tasman

Your Year to Volunteer – Tōu tau ki te tūao

National Volunteer Week (Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu) 2026 provided a meaningful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution of volunteers across Cancer Society Nelson Tasman.

From driving clients to appointments, supporting major fundraising events, assisting at Relay For Life, and contributing governance expertise, our volunteers are essential to delivering cancer support services across the Nelson Tasman region.

This year’s theme, “Your Year to Volunteer – Tōu tau ki te tūao,” aligns with the United Nations International Year of Volunteers (IVY2026), highlighting the global importance of volunteering and community connection.

Throughout the week, we shared stories from four volunteers and groups who reflect the diversity, commitment, and heart of our volunteer community.

Suzanna Pearson – Community Volunteer & Creative Contributor

Suzanna has volunteered with Cancer Society Nelson Tasman for the past year, contributing across events and creative initiatives.

Her involvement includes the Historical Homes Tour, Daffodil Day, Relay For Life, creative volunteer projects, and fundraising events such as the Vintage Car Rally. She also generously shares her professional expertise as a Colour and Wardrobe Stylist, supporting women affected by cancer with practical styling advice.

Suzanna’s volunteering journey began after attending the Historical Homes Tour, where her passion for Nelson’s heritage homes led her to offer her own 1910 villa for the 2025 tour.

She values the opportunity to connect with others and be part of a supportive community making a difference.

Simon Linstone – Volunteer Driver Support

Simon has been volunteering for Cancer Society Nelson Tasman for approximately two and a half years, primarily as a volunteer driver supporting clients attending medical appointments.

His volunteering began after being approached at a Daffodil Rally and quickly became a meaningful way to give back to the community.

Through his driving role, Simon provides not only transport assistance but also companionship and conversation, helping make journeys to treatment more comfortable for clients. He describes these interactions as grounding and perspective-shifting, and values the appreciation shown by those he supports.

Simon also highlights the supportive and flexible nature of volunteering with Cancer Society Nelson Tasman.

Debbie Cooper-Norriss – Volunteer and Board Member

Debbie has been involved with Cancer Society Nelson Tasman for five years, contributing to a wide range of fundraising activities including Daffodil Day, Relay For Life, and sponsorship of the Charity Ball.

Most recently, she has also joined the Board, further strengthening her commitment to supporting the organisation at a governance level.

Debbie volunteers because she strongly believes in the importance of the Cancer Society’s work and the vital services it provides to people affected by cancer in the community.

She describes volunteering as being part of something larger than any one individual—an effort that relies on collective community support to create meaningful impact.

Debbie also acknowledges the dedication of both staff and volunteers, recognising the strength and compassion of the wider Cancer Society team.

23 Squadron Air Cadets – Relay For Life Volunteer Group

The 23 Squadron Air Cadets have supported Cancer Society Nelson Tasman at Relay For Life events over several years, providing vital event support.

Their roles include traffic marshalling, setting up tents and infrastructure, and assisting with logistics to ensure smooth event delivery.

Their involvement reflects the core values of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, including service, teamwork, and community responsibility. Many cadets are personally impacted by cancer through family and friends, which strengthens their commitment to volunteering.

In a memorable show of support, the cadets also embraced a Relay For Life challenge by taking part in a head shave fundraiser, demonstrating dedication and team spirit.

Thank you to our volunteers

Cancer Society Nelson Tasman extends heartfelt thanks to all volunteers who contribute throughout the year. Whether supporting events such as Relay For Life and Daffodil Day, driving clients, or providing governance and behind-the-scenes support, every contribution makes a difference.

Volunteers are central to our mission of supporting people impacted by cancer across Nelson Tasman.
