Sometimes the most meaningful acts of generosity begin with a simple idea – and a friendship.
Deb O’Leary and Ali have been friends for more than 30 years, first meeting while camping in Kaikōura, where they discovered a shared love of art. Decades later, that connection has grown into something truly special for the Nelson Tasman community.
Deb has always loved creating art, but recently she felt a strong pull to use her creativity for something more.
“The Cancer Society is a cause close to my heart because my mother passed away from cancer, and my sister too when she was far too young to go,” Deb shares. “I always had a love for art and drew the daffodil cards. One day it came on my heart that I would like to use my art to support a worthy cause.”
As Deb reflected on her artwork, particularly her daffodil designs, everything seemed to fall into place. Supporting Cancer Society Nelson Tasman simply felt right.
Like many great ideas, this one needed a little encouragement to take its next step. That’s where Ali came in.
“Deb is a beautiful friend with the biggest heart,” Ali says. “It’s been a joy to encourage Deb in her dream to use her artistic talent to support a cause close to her heart.”
The cause also holds deep personal meaning for Ali, who has lost a sister, a niece, and a friend to cancer far too soon. Wanting to help bring Deb’s vision to life, Ali generously funded the printing of the cards. Together, the pair carefully packaged them, preparing each set so they could be sold to raise funds for local cancer support services.
Thanks to their kindness and collaboration, these beautiful daffodil cards will now be available at Relay For Life and at Cancer Society stalls on Daffodil Day, helping raise vital funds to support people and whānau across Nelson Tasman affected by cancer.
This project is a reminder that community impact often begins with personal stories, friendship, creativity, and a shared desire to make a difference.
We are incredibly grateful to Deb and Ali for turning art, compassion, and friendship into something that will help support others when they need it most.
