Our 2026 Annual General Meeting brought members, volunteers and supporters together to celebrate the past year, discuss the future of cancer care in New Zealand, and hear an inspiring message of resilience from keynote speaker Simon Rieter.
Cancer Society Nelson Tasman members, volunteers, supporters and guests came together this week for our Annual General Meeting, held at the Nelson Provincial Museum.
The evening provided an opportunity to reflect on the past year, acknowledge the achievements made possible through the support of our community, and look ahead to the work still to be done.
Following the formal AGM, we welcomed Nelson electorate candidates to discuss the Cancer Society’s 2026 Election Manifesto and the future of cancer care in Aotearoa New Zealand. Rather than focusing on party politics, the discussion centred on the issues that matter most to people impacted by cancer and the actions needed to improve outcomes.
Candidates were invited to respond to five key questions covering:
- Improving cancer outcomes over the next three years.
- Strengthening cancer prevention and early detection.
- Improving equitable access to cancer care for Māori, Pacific peoples, rural communities and those experiencing financial hardship.
- Building a sustainable cancer system with the workforce, infrastructure and resources needed for the future.
- The measurable outcomes New Zealanders should expect over the next parliamentary term.
The discussion was respectful and thoughtful, giving members an opportunity to hear directly from those standing for election about their vision for cancer care in New Zealand.
We were also privileged to hear from keynote speaker Simon Rieter, who shared his personal story of resilience. Speaking openly about overcoming adversity, Simon encouraged those attending to focus on what truly matters, make time for their own wellbeing, and embrace the power of a positive mindset.
His honest and inspiring presentation was a fitting reminder that resilience is built one choice at a time and that looking after ourselves helps us better support those around us.

A special thank you to the Nelson Provincial Museum for hosting the evening. Guests also enjoyed the opportunity to view the Tikumu – Mountain Daisy exhibition, which provided a unique backdrop for an evening of reflection, conversation and connection.
Together, we remain committed to improving the experience of cancer for everyone in our community and ensuring the voices of those impacted by cancer continue to be heard.
