A Champion for Community, Culture and Wellbeing.
On Wednesday, our team had the privilege of attending the retirement celebration of the extraordinary Miraka Norgate at Whakatū Marae. More than 200 people gathered to acknowledge and celebrate a woman whose strength, aroha and lifelong service have made a lasting impact across the Nelson Tasman region.
Miraka has been a long-time supporter of the Cancer Society Nelson Tasman; a board member, an active volunteer and a guiding presence who has given so much of her time and wisdom to our mahi. Her leadership in health promotion, particularly for Māori, has helped strengthen whānau and communities across our rohe.
Originally from Hokianga, Miraka (Ngā Puhi Nui Tonu) moved to Richmond in 1975 and quickly became a driving force for change. She helped establish the first kōhanga reo in the region, supported the development of marae including Te Awhina and Onetahua, and held leadership roles in health, education and community wellbeing. Her paid work included many years as a SmokeFree health promoter with Te Whatu Ora Nelson Marlborough.
In June 2023, Miraka was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for her outstanding service to the community – a recognition that speaks to her decades of unwavering commitment.
Her send-off was filled with stories, waiata and heartfelt tributes. It was clear that her legacy is one of strength, compassion and quiet determination.
While she may have retired from her formal role, Miraka will no doubt continue to be active in the community, generously sharing her time and knowledge in ways that uplift others.
Tino kino te pai, Miraka. We are so grateful for all that you have given, and all that is still to come.
Ngā mihi nui from all of us at Cancer Society Nelson Tasman.
