After an incredible 12 months living in Nagano, Japan, with my husband Stu and our two daughters, I am delighted to be back at my desk at Cancer Society Nelson Tasman.

Our year in Japan was a wonderful adventure and an opportunity for our family to experience a completely different way of life. From immersing ourselves in Japanese culture and traditions to exploring beautiful places and making lasting memories, it really was an experience of a lifetime. While it was hard to say goodbye to Japan, it is lovely to be home in Nelson and back doing work that I am so passionate about. It has also been wonderful to return to that lovely feeling of summer in the air, with longer, warmer days ahead and, of course, Christmas just around the corner! There really is something special about this time of year in Nelson Tasman.

I would like to extend a very special thank you to Venus Guy, who stepped into the leadership role during my absence. Venus did a fantastic job leading the team and ensuring everything continued to run smoothly.

A huge thank you also goes to our wonderful Cancer Society team, who continued delivering the important work we do across Nelson Tasman. It is reassuring to know that we have such a capable and passionate group of people who genuinely care about making a difference in our community.

I would also like to sincerely thank our Board for supporting my sabbatical and giving me this amazing opportunity. Having the chance to spend a year overseas with my family was something very special, and I am extremely grateful for their support.

As we head towards Christmas, I am also very mindful that this time of year isn’t easy for everyone. For those who have lost someone they love to cancer, Christmas can be a particularly difficult time. While the world around us is celebrating, there can be an empty chair at the table and a familiar face and a voice deeply missed. The passing of time doesn’t take away that loss, and special occasions often remind us just how much our loved ones meant to us. My thoughts are with all those who will be missing someone this Christmas, and with those currently facing cancer and the challenges it brings. Please know that you are not forgotten and that our Cancer Society team is here to support you. Please remember that you are not alone. If you or someone you know needs support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team. We are here to listen, help and support you in whatever way we can.

Please bear in mind that our Cancer Society Nelson and Tasman offices will be closed from 1pm, Wednesday 23 December 2026 and will reopen at 9am, Wednesday 6 January 2027. The Cancer helpline – to talk to one of our cancer support nurses 0800 226 237 – closes 12 noon, Thursday 24 December 2026 and reopens 8.30am, Tuesday 5 January 2027.

If you anticipate needing our support over the holiday period, please get in touch with us before we close so we can assist where possible.

It is wonderful to be back, and I look forward to seeing many of you again soon!
