We know that cancer treatment often requires travel to larger cities where specialised care is available. To help ease this burden, the Cancer Society offers a comfortable home away from home close to major hospitals, so you can focus on your health and treatment with peace of mind.

Our Accommodation Locations

We have welcoming accommodation facilities near hospitals in key centres across New Zealand. These are designed to provide a supportive, restful environment for people undergoing cancer treatment away from home.

Christchurch – Canterbury Cancer Centre

Our Christchurch facility is a new, purpose-built centre providing integrated cancer support for patients across the South Island, ensuring you have access to comprehensive care and comfortable accommodation. Find out more here.

Wellington – Margaret Stewart House

If you’re from out-of-town and having cancer treatment at the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre. The house is located in the grounds of Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Wellington. How to Access Accommodation

To stay at any of our Cancer Society accommodation houses, you’ll need a referral from your specialist or local hospital. Your healthcare team can assist you with the referral process.

National Travel Assistance (NTA)

National Travel Assistance (NTA) is offered by the Ministry of Health and may help you to meet some of the costs if you have to travel to see specialists and for treatment. Find out more here or talk to our Supportive Care team on what is available to you.
